On April 22, 2011 they organized an Earthday Celebration at Galeria de la Raza along with PODER youth program in the mission. I was invited to show my work, as an indigenous and eco fashion designer. The mini collection I made was inspired by Danza Azteca trajes and dance. The fabrics I used were all from remenent fabrics, fabrics that would otherwise be in our landfills. The design is no waste pattern making, I use the whole piece of fabric to create interesting silhouettes. The colors I chose also represented the four directions White-North, Yellow-East, Black-West and Red-South. Here are a few pictures and a video taken by Shadi, co founder of SNAG. Please stop by their website to learn more about their youth program: www.snagmagazine.com
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I for one enjoy being there and having my clothing there. I hope you all can stop by and look at all the wonderful art and maybe buy and support this local business. Check out the exhibit they have now called, Rise Up, poster art from Dignidad Rebelde from Oakland. I was not offended, just that I have never explained these pieces to anyone. Here is my artist statement for these pieces:

El Cine de Oro: My living Offrenda

In 2007 I was given the opportunity to showcase my designs for a Dia de los Muertos fashion show at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, Ca by Mia, of Encantada Gallery, in the Mission. She was curating a big show for Dia de los Muertos. Her theme for the fashion show was, "Mambo Muertos" living offrendas. The fashion show was to showcase I and other lovely designers and artist. I have always been inspired by Zoot Suitors and Pachucas of the 1940's. So I dedicated my offrenda to the most famous Zoot Suiter of Mexico, Tin Tan. A star of the Cine de Oro in the 40's. These pieces are to my antepasados of the Zoot Suit riots, those who beaten and striped of their drapes during those terrible nights that the riots took place in East Los. These pieces are dedicated to the great actors and artists of the Golden Age in Mexico, when film and art thrived. The mix of a vintage Zoot Suit with a collar shirt inspired by my brothers and sisters of Guatemala, whose traditions are sacred and passed on even in the so called "civilized" world. This offrenda is for them also, the women and men who still dress in their traditional clothing and carry their traditions throughout centuries. The dress I made is inspired by the weaving and embroidery that are the huipilis. I was truly lucky to work with a great team, they all helped me put my vision to life. This is only a short explanation of my vision before I got together with the models, photographer and hairstylist. I wanted documentation of the outfits but what came of these photos was another piece of it's own...

Photographer:

Gustavo Rodriguez

The models:

Mayra Ramirez and Hugo Hernandez

Mayra's Hair:

Amaru of Hair Sauce in San Francisco, Ca

Sol Collective in Sacramento

Last month I sent new items to Sol Collective, an art gallery and community space in Sacramento, Ca. Before I moved to Salinas, Ca this is where I spent my days working as an art teacher. Since I have been back in the Bay Area, I substitute as an Art Teacher. This is a wonderful program and center for Adults with Disabilities, there are programs from teaching art skills to healthy living skills. They have a website: www.steppingstonesgrowth.org This workshop was so much fun and a huge success! We made our silkscreens from organza fabric in an embroidery hoop and used mod podge as our emulsion. This process was so fun an inexpensive. Please check out the website and donate to the center. Also Artful Steps Program will be having an art show in Union City, Ca on February 26 at 7pm at Paddy's Cafe in Old Alvarado.

Artillery Art Gallery en La Mission

Hello all, I just dropped off some new woman's tops to Artillery AG, located in the Great Mission of San Francisco, Ca. In December 2009 Artillery and I organized a Holiday Fashion Show. We showcased the local designers that Artillery supports by selling these beautiful items in their store. Designers such as Nicacelly, Invisible Hero, Indie Industries and Itzpapalotl. Check out Artillery website at http://www.artillery-ag.com and visit them to check out the clothing and art.

New items just posted!!!
